Algeria is hosting a ministerial meeting this Wednesday, June 3, with Niger and Nigeria on the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline, a long-stalled project intended to carry Nigerian gas to Algeria via Niger, El Khabar reported, citing Algeria’s Energy Ministry.

The three countries are expected to review the project’s progress and the results of an updated feasibility study carried out by Penspen. Officials from Sonatrach, Nigeria’s NNPC and Niger’s Sonidep are also expected to take part in the talks.

Algiers, Abuja and Niamey signed a new agreement in the Algerian capital on February 11, 2025, to continue coordinating on the project, which aims to allow Nigeria, a major gas producer, to export gas to Europe through Algerian infrastructure.

But the pipeline, first discussed in the 2000s and revived several times since, has never been completed. It has been held back by its cost, the length of the route and instability in several Sahelian areas it would cross.
