Iraqi authorities’ claims over the alleged dismantling of a cell working for Ukraine have quickly moved beyond the security sphere, taking on a diplomatic dimension, reported Al-Alam al-Jadiid on July 29.
The controversy erupted after Iraq’s National Security Adviser Qasim al-Araji said that individuals linked to Kyiv had been arrested over alleged sabotage operations on Iraqi soil. Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry issued a categorical denial, describing the accusations as “baseless” and “irresponsible” while criticizing Baghdad for failing to provide any official notification.
According to Iraqi authorities, the information is still based on preliminary reports currently under review. Former minister and ambassador Salam al-Maliki stressed that the national security adviser’s statements were based on technical information provided to relevant security agencies, while acknowledging that the investigation remains ongoing. He emphasized that no formal diplomatic accusation had been made against Ukraine and that Baghdad intends to follow official procedures before contacting the countries concerned.
Kyiv accused of targeting Iranian vessel
Kyiv nevertheless considers these explanations insufficient. In its statement, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said that no evidence had been presented and accused Iraqi authorities of publicizing the case before using established diplomatic channels. Ukraine also argued that the allegations echoed Russian propaganda efforts aimed at damaging its relations with Middle Eastern countries.
The diplomatic dispute comes amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Kyiv. Iran has accused Ukraine of carrying out a strike on July 25 against an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea, allegedly suspected of transporting weapons to Russia. The attack reportedly killed one person and wounded several others.
Meanwhile, Iraq has faced growing tensions in recent weeks between the United States, Iran, and Iranian-backed armed groups operating on its territory. According to Al-Alam al-Jadiid, raising the possibility of Ukrainian involvement could divert attention from domestic debates over the role of armed factions and the state’s monopoly over security.
At this stage, Baghdad has released no public evidence supporting the allegations, while Ukraine continues to firmly reject them. The outcome of the ongoing investigations will be crucial in determining any potential responsibility, but also in preventing the dispute from escalating into a broader diplomatic crisis between the two countries.
