Iraq is facing a major environmental crisis linked to plastic consumption estimated at nearly 20,000 tonnes per day, according to officials from the Environment Ministry cited by Al Alam Al Jadid.
Authorities and experts warn about the impact of illegal dumping sites, rising pollution levels, and health risks associated with the accumulation of microplastics in the environment.
The government has announced measures to curb the use of plastic bags, including a gradual ban and the promotion of biodegradable alternatives such as paper and fabric.
Experts cited by Al Alam Al Jadid say the crisis could also be turned into an economic opportunity through industrial recycling, capable of generating raw materials and jobs.
