Arab news at a glance

Former Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi died on May 28 at his residence in Riyadh at the age of 80, according to official and media sources.

He became president in 2012 following the departure of Ali Abdullah Saleh amid the Arab Spring uprising, as a consensus figure tasked with overseeing a political transition.

His tenure was soon undermined by the Houthi insurgency and the gradual collapse of state authority, forcing him to leave Sanaa in 2015 and take refuge in Saudi Arabia.

From exile, he remained the internationally recognised president as Yemen descended into a prolonged civil war, further intensified by the intervention of a Saudi-led Arab coalition starting in 2015.

In 2022, he formally transferred his powers to a Presidential Leadership Council, bringing to an end a decade-long presidency marked by war and exile.
