Meeting on May 21 in Cairo under the Tripartite Mechanism of Libya’s neighbouring countries, the foreign ministers of Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia reaffirmed their commitment to Libya’s unity and sovereignty.
The three countries stressed that a UN-led political process remains the only viable path out of the crisis, calling for presidential and parliamentary elections to overcome Libya’s entrenched institutional divide.
Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has remained split between rival centres of power, with a UN-recognised government in Tripoli and eastern authorities aligned with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
The final communiqué also voiced concern over recent violence, political assassinations, and the continued presence of foreign forces and mercenaries on Libyan soil.
