France reaffirmed on 20 May in Rabat that “the present and future of the Sahara” fall under Morocco’s sovereignty, through French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot. Paris now considers Morocco’s autonomy plan as “the only basis” for a political settlement of the dispute.
France also announced concrete measures in the southern provinces, including the opening of a visa centre in Laâyoune, the establishment of a new Alliance Française branch, and expanded economic investment. The stance further strengthens strategic ties between Rabat and Paris on a key national issue for Morocco.
During the visit, the French foreign minister also announced an upcoming state visit by King Mohammed VI to France, without specifying a date. The trip is expected to mark a major political milestone, including the signing of a future Franco-Moroccan treaty.
