The Comoros inaugurated three UAE-funded solar power plants on 5 September, with facilities located on the three main islands of Grande Comore, Anjouan and Mohéli.
Together, the plants have a combined capacity of around 20 MW, backed by battery storage. The project, worth AED 84.4 million (around $23 million), was financed by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, developed by Masdar, and is managed by Global South Utilities.
The facilities are expected to generate 33.75 GWh of electricity per year, enough to supply around 17,500 households. They should also help reduce the archipelago’s heavy reliance on imported diesel.
The project also reflects the UAE’s growing economic and strategic footprint across Africa and the Indian Ocean, particularly in energy and infrastructure. Emirati companies are expanding renewable energy projects across the continent, including in Madagascar, Somalia and several African states.
For the Comoros, the investment provides new electricity generation capacity while further strengthening ties with Abu Dhabi, which has become an increasingly important development and investment partner.
