Algeria wants to tap the wind potential of several Saharan areas to develop 1,000 MW of green electricity, reduce domestic gas consumption and preserve more volumes for export, according to El-Khabar.
The project, being studied with the World Bank, covers ten sites, including Adrar, In Salah and Tindouf. It is part of the national programme targeting 15,000 MW of renewable energy by 2035, alongside a 3,000 MW solar plan.
A major gas producer and exporter, Algeria already has its first wind farm in Adrar, commissioned in 2014, but wind power remains marginal in its energy mix.
